Examples of emergencies

  • severe trauma including being hit by a car or being attacked by another animal
  • collapse and loss of consciousness including reduced responsiveness
  • significant bleeding
  • severe vomiting or diarrhoea
  • laboured breathing - breathing that is noisy, faster than normal with and involves noticeable chest movements. (Normal breathing at rest is subtle).
  • difficulty urinating - especially in male cats and male dogs – keeping trying to go and producing little or no urine
  • severe pain
  • not being able to walk at all or on one or more legs
  • a seizure (or fit) lasting more than 5 minutes
  • heat stroke – often if left in a car in hot weather
  • the pet has eaten something potentially toxic.

Urgent concerns that need prompt attention include vomiting, not eating, lacking in energy or significant lameness.
